Introduction

Altus Energy Technologies is developing a product called AltusBTM , a hybrid edge/cloud optimization platform for commercial and industrial behind-the-meter (BTM) battery systems in the 50 kW to 2 MW range. We’re focused on this mid-scale segment because it’s underserved – most of the available tools are either too basic or too complex for these types of sites.

The problem

Energy costs are rising, the grid is increasingly unstable, and many C&I facilities are investing in battery storage. The issue is that once those batteries are installed, they often aren’t being used effectively. Operators don’t have the time or expertise to manually optimize dispatch based on rate schedules, site load, or changing conditions. The result: systems that underperform and fail to deliver expected savings or backup value. That’s the problem we’re addressing.

Our solution

AltusBTM solves this with a hybrid architecture: a local edge device that talks to the battery and site meters, and a cloud-based software layer that integrates real-time utility pricing, weather, and load forecasts. Together, they enable smart, automated control that reduces peak charges, enables arbitrage, and improves resilience. The system is designed to be easy to deploy, transparent in operation, and focused on measurable ROI.
